Mental health crisis leads to fatal police shooting in Nampa following attempted carjacking
NAMPA, Idaho (CBS2) — A police shooting in Nampa has left one person dead.
CBS2's Luke Randle spoke with Detectives at the scene. Police say that a patient at St. Luke's on St. Luke's Dr. was believed to have had a mental health crisis when they fled the hospital and that is when police were called to assist.
The patient is believed to have broken into O'Crab on Marketplace Blvd. and stole a knife, which they then used to attempt a carjacking at the nearby Chic-Fil-A. The carjacking was unsuccessful, and the occupants of the vehicle are reportedly safe.
After the unsuccessful carjacking, the patient reportedly ran to the McDonald's drive-thru where an officer made contact. The patient reportedly charged the officer with the knife and the officer shot and hit them in the chest. Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful and the person died on scene.
The Critical Incident Task Force has responded and an investigation is underway, as is commonplace with police shootings. Canyon County Sheriff's Office will be leading the investigation. Nampa Police report the officer involved has served on the NPD for roughly 1.5 years.
